Day11, Camino Walk, Pontevedra to Combarro
Miles-8.5, Time-4.5 hrs, Weather-clouds w/ sun, 50’s to high 60’s, Elevation- 541ft. Today was a pretty short day compared to some of our previous days. Today we left the actual Camino route and started an alternative route called the Spiritual Variant Route. This route adds a couple extra days to our walk. The Spiritual Variant, is reported the route that they took the Apostle James’s body to Santiago after he was killed.
We left Pontevedra, just before 8am, after stopping for our morning Cafe con Leche, fancy right!! Then it was a short walk out of Pontevedra, hitting the Spiritual Variant in just under a mile. If there were say 100 people at the Camino split, at the same time, I would say only 20 out of that 100 goes the way of the Spiritual Variant. It’s not that well known as theregular Camino Route, and it does add a couple more days to your walk, that’s my take. Anyway the SV- Spiritual Variant, goes up into the foothills passing through small villages, lots of grape vines growing everywhere, winding little roads, small farms..etc…We went into 1of 2 Monasteries, very beautiful, that we pass on this route. Then we arrived at Combarro, picturesque quaint little fishing village, something out of a movie set. We meet another couple from Washington St, real nice people, and it turns out they are staying at the same two hotels we are for the next two nights. So we chatted with them for an awhile, with our daily Coke Zero’s, before we were able to check into our hotel, the Camino Way, meet and talk to strangers. After checking into our room, we went out and bought a small bag of fresh cherry's, yummy, then explored the town a bit, had some gelato ice cream, then went and had a delicious dinner to celebrate our 25th yr Anniversary❤️❤️
Tomorrow is the big climb, we go up about 1300ft and it starts as soon as we step out our hotel. Stay tuned!!
The pictures are great! Love the flowers! Enjoy!
