No official Camino miles walked, but have been averaging 6-5 miles per day exploring Santiago de Compostela. Weather has been getting hotter each day, into 90’s yesterday, and humid. We meet our new Camino friends, Gary & Nancy in the big plaza, in front of the Cathedral when they arrived on Saturday. It’s fun to watch people’s expressions when they first arrive at the Cathedral, so many different reactions, even witnessed two wedding proposals. Visited about two dozen churches, monastery’s and anything that looked old. We did a rooftop tour of the Cathedral, awesome, took in a couple of museums, even saw the famous Portico of Glory, located in the foyer of the Cathedral. We did attend one Catholic Mass. We were hoping to see the swinging of the Butafumiero, but the two times we attempted to see it the church was full and we didn’t get to see it, oh well, I’ll try next yr. Have eaten at so many different types of restaurants, Maryann is way more adventurous than me for s...
Miles- 7.5, Time-3.5hrs, Weather-cloudy w/ lite misty rain, Temp- 50’s-low 60’s. Elevation- 1460ft. Today was our big hike up to the Monastery at Armenteria. This is the section that most people talk about on the Spiritual Variant route because of the elevation gain. The day started off with a very lite misty drizzle, not enough to put on our rain poncho’s but we did cover our packs with the rain covers, just in case. The actual steepest was just getting out of Combarro, since the village is built on the side of a the mountain. Once we reach the road it turned into a gradual up hill walk, not bad at all. Then we started up the dirt road portion, which also was just a nice gradual climb. It was very peaceful and beautiful scenery, only crossing a handful of people the whole trip. We reached the top in a little over 2 hrs, then a nice easy walk down to Armenteria. We arrived at a local cafe, had our Coffee & OJ. Friends we meet a couple days ago joined us at our table and ...
Boat ride-17+ miles, Miles walked-10, Time-5:09, Weather- Rain, light to moderate, Temp-50’s, Elevation- 439ft. Today was the last of our Spiritual Variant walk. Actually it wasn’t a walk at all, we took a small boat from Vilanova de Arousa to Pontcesures, just a little over 17 miles. Then we proceeded to walk into Padron, (1.5 miles) and that was the end of our Spiritual Variant walk. All I can say, it was awesome and so glad we decided to do it. Back to the start of the day, we had quick breakfast at our hotel then proceeded to the boat harbor to catch our boat, leaving @ 7:30. It just started to rain as we the harbor. Luckily our boat was one that you could sit inside and stay dry, but had windows on all sides to see out. Our new friends, Greg & Nancy took a different boat which had no protection from the rain, they were given poncho’s 😂😂. We all ended up at Pontcesures at the same time, so we walked into Padron, found a cafe, and proceeded to drink coffee, en...
